SALTHOUSE
is renowned
for it's excellent beach fishing. Species that are caught here are fine
Dabs,Flounder,Sole and the occasional Bass are taken in the summer months.
Codling are caught in ever decreasing numbers during the winter. The beach is
shingle, there is a sandy area 60 yards out. The bait I use here is Lug worm
which can be obtained from houses at the top of the beach path.
WEYBOURNE The beach
here is shingle and shelves into deep water. There are a lot of sand bars at
about 40 yards and a wreck which is visible at low tide. Species to be caught
here are Bass,Cod,Sole,Flounders,Whiting and eel's. To the right of the beach
under the cliff, the bottom is very rugged but Bass and Cod do tend to shoal
up here and fishing is very good ...... sometimes! Bait used is mainly Lug worm but
Peeler crab, Squid
and Mackerel all catch
fish. This beach is the ideal novice beach as casting long distances is not
always required due to the depth of water. Lug worm can be obtained from locals
who will have a sign outside there house.
CROMER
This
is the venue for me! I have enjoyed the fishing in Cromer for years. Cromer
has some great fishing beaches and also the Pier. The pier fishing gives you
access to some great fishing, although
they do charge you a £1 for the privilege! The pier offers you mixed catches
of Flatties, eel's,Bass,Whitting and Codling. The occasional small Tope is not
uncommon. My favorite baits here are Peeler and Squid in the Summer and Lug
worm and Squid in the Winter. Bait can be obtained from Marine sports at the
top of the beach access slope.
MUNDESLEY
Is
another flat and sandy beach, although a cast of around 50 yards at low tide
will put you at the bottom of a sandbank, a very productive area. Flatfish, eel's
and Bass are the dominating species during the summer, with Cod and Whiting
appearing from October.
This beach in my opinion is underrated, I have caught both my personal best
Cod and Bass here, 8ib and 12ib respectively, I have also had some lovely
Flounder in the past. Summer baits have got to be Peeler and Squid but Lug
worm out fishes everything in the Winter. Lug worm can be dug here at Low
tide, however you may need a bait pump.
BACTON
Another
underestimated beach mark,
similar to Mundesley. Loads of Dabs
(some clonkers!),Flounders and the very odd sole make
up summer catches with
Cod and Whiting figuring in the Winter. A long cast is advised for this mark,
as it is a rather shallow mark until about 150 yards out from low water, where
it shelves. Lug worm works well all year round here and is available from
houses along the access road.
WALCOTT
A favorite
mark of mine, Walcott
always tends to produce a mixed bag of fish even when other marks are
struggling. Species here include, Flatties,Bass, Codling and Whiting. The sea
comes up to the concrete wall here so 3 hours before and 1 hour after low tide
are my favored times to fish. Lug worm and peeler are great summer baits with
Lugworm and Squid favored in Winter. Bait available from tackle shop on
promenade.
HAPPISBURGH
Much
the same as Walcott, however Skate do come inshore during the summer, but a long
cast is required to get amongst them (which rules me out!). Fishing is good at
high water.
ECCLES
A
very long sandy beach which fishes all year through for Dabs and some lovely
Flounder. Cod and Whiting figure from October. Best fished at high water. Best
baits, Lugworm and Peeler.
HEMSBY/NEWPORT/SCRATBY
The beach here is very deep close in and favors
the novice caster, especially at low water. Tides run strong here, with the
last 3 hours of the flood and the ebb producing the goods. Flatfish, eel's and
some large Bass can be caught here during the Summer, with Cod taken in the
winter. Scratby produced a 32Ib Cod in 1981! Best baits are Lugworm, Squid and
peeler during the summer, with worm baits best in winter.
