Tucked out of the way, off the main road in Heacham, West Norfolk, lies Pocahontas Lake.

Originally dug as an estate decoy lake for the gentry of the day, it laid in rack and ruin for many years, totally over-grown and silted up.

After three years of hard work the lake has been cleared and totally restored to it’s former glory and turned into a stunning and peaceful mixed coarse fishery.

The lake itself is about three acres in size and is fed by the river Hitch which circles the boundaries of the lake.

At the feeder stream end there is a fairly narrow bay which opens up into the main part of the lake.

In the middle there is an island and just beyond that is the outflow which rejoins the river just beyond the boat house.

Depths prove to be about three to four feet in the bay and steadily deepening to about five to six feet at the boat house end, not a deep lake by any stretch of the imagination.

The lake holds a good head of double figured carp, mainly ghost and commons, stocked under the watchful eye of Neville Fikling, who visits the lake every three to four months to check on progress, but also has good stocks of roach, bream and rudd.

The lake record for carp stands at twenty six pounds, set by Terry Housego.

Pocahontas lake offers twenty secluded swims lined with mature horse chestnut and willow set in a country estate, and a stretch of the river Hitch which holds wild brown trout, roach, dace and small chub.
